'Late' is an extension, a clarification, of their sound, where a warm but sparse electronic pulse and yearning vocals are occasionally spliced by guitars, a near relation to the Nancy Sinatra gone electro-pop leanings of Birmingham's Broadcast. It's deeply dreamy, tranquil and wistful, revolving around Regina Janssen's cool, calm, emotionally-detached route by-passing the heart, like St. Etienne's Sarah Cracknell hooked on Kraftwerk. Her simply suggestive way with words never fails to enthral. Rarely is melancholy done quite so magnificently Ian Fletcher CWAS #13 - Autumn 2003 back |
