Wussom*Pow! | Deep Blue Hearts and Solid Hands (Omnibus Records)
Having formed roughly five years ago, this San Francisco quartet (comprising members of Fighter D, Poastal and J-Church) finally releases this, their debut album. Sonically they are flanked by twin influences of The Velvet Underground and Neu! - only with breathy girl vocals provided by Linda Yeo. Their affiliation with this latter band is particularly evident on the instrumental Midnight Drive (in the spirit of setting the scene, this one comes prefixed by the sound of somebody actually getting into a car and jangling the keys, crickets signifying night in the background). Wussom*Pow! are a band that know how to use simplicity to their advantage, and each individual uncomplicated ingredient (fuzzy guitar, crystalline vocals) combines to form a whole that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
